Top Copyright Official Assails Google Book Settlement - NYTimes.com.
A few comments:
While David Drummond, chief legal officer for Google, contends, accurately, that authors can withdraw their work from Google's database at any time, he doesn't address the impact on authors of establishing a blanket, non-negotiable rate of payment for online display of books.
Google is attempting to blunt the opposition of Amazon and B&N by giving them a piece of the action. Will they go for it?
The article also describes the Book Rights Registry as "administered by authors and publishers." This is the first I've heard this. In fact, information about the BRR and how it would operate continues to be extremely vague. As an author, that is one of my principle concerns with the agreement. It seems to lump authors and publishers together as one entity with united interests, which is far from the case, and, specific details on how BRR would operate, and who would operate it, are extremely lacking.
